Jordi Cuixart, president d\u2019\u00d2mnium Cultural, s\u2019ha fet sentir a Dubl\u00edn (Irlanda) a la trobada internacional de defensors de drets humans m\u00e9s important del m\u00f3n: la Plataforma Dubl\u00edn 2019 de Defensors de Drets Humans en Risc. Mitjan\u00e7ant la lectura d\u2019una carta, Cuixart ha explicat el seu cas als assistents i ha alertat que \u201cel fet que l\u2019Estat espanyol faci servir els tribunals i el codi penal per debilitar els drets humans \u00e9s una molt mala not\u00edcia per Europa i pel m\u00f3n\u201d.<\/p>\n

Davant del p\u00fablic assistent a la trobada Plataforma Dubl\u00edn 2019, Elena Jim\u00e9nez, membre de la junta d\u2019\u00d2mnium Cultural, ha llegit la carta de Jordi Cuixart on el president de l\u2019entitat ha explicat que \u201che estat empresonat des de l\u2019octubre de 2017, acusat de sedici\u00f3 i rebel\u00b7li\u00f3, delictes que segons el Codi Penal espanyol requereixen haver fet \u00fas de la viol\u00e8ncia per derrocar l\u2019estat, quelcom que no es va produir\u201d. Cuixart ha denunciat que \u201cel meu crim va ser liderar una manifestaci\u00f3 fent \u00fas de la seva llibertat d\u2019expressi\u00f3 i dret de protesta per defensar un refer\u00e8ndum d\u2019autodeterminaci\u00f3\u201d.<\/p>\n

El president d\u2019\u00d2mnium ha posat \u00e8mfasi en el fet que Pedro S\u00e1nchez, president del govern espanyol, est\u00e0 ignorant l\u2019informe del grup de treball sobre detencions arbitr\u00e0ries de l\u2019ONU en el qual es demana la seva llibertat immediata i una indemnitzaci\u00f3 pels dos anys de pres\u00f3 preventiva. Cuixart tamb\u00e9 ha citat les crides fetes per ONGs internacionals com Amnistia Internacional, l\u2019Organitzaci\u00f3 Mundial Contra la Tortura i Front Line Defenders.<\/p>\n

Qu\u00e8 \u00e9s la Plataforma Dubl\u00edn per a defensors de Drets Humans?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creada el 2010, \u00e9s un esdeveniment bianual organitzat per Front Line Defenders que ofereix l\u2019oportunitat de reunir els defensors de drets humans d\u2019arreu del m\u00f3n. Durant tres dies al Castell de Dublin, els defensors de DDHH d\u2019arreu del m\u00f3n comparteixen estrat\u00e8gies d\u2019incid\u00e8ncia i protecci\u00f3, construeixen solidaritat amb companys d\u2019arreu del m\u00f3n i es relaciona amb stakeholders i organismes governamentals i intergovernamentals.<\/p>\n

Front Line Defenders ja ha reconegut Jordi Cuixart com a defensor de DDHH<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c9s l\u2019ONG m\u00e9s prestigiosa respecte als defensors de drets humans. Treballa en l\u2019\u00e0mbit del Consell d\u2019Europa, Nacions Unides i porta el programa de defensors de drets humans de la UE. Aquesta organitzaci\u00f3 ha ha denunciat p\u00fablicament la situaci\u00f3 de Jordi Cuixart i l\u2019ha reconegut com a defensor de drets humans.<\/p>\n

Dear Human Rights Defenders,<\/p>\n

I have been incarcerated since October 2017,\u00a0 charged with sedition and rebellion, crimes which under Spain’s law require having committed violence with a view to overthrowing the state, which obviously never occurred. Nonetheless in the coming weeks\u00a0 I face a sentence of up to 17 years in prison for my “crime”, which was leading a peaceful demonstration using my right to free speech and freedom of assembly to defend Catalonia\u2019s self-determination referendum on 1 October 2017.<\/p>\n

I speak as the president of \u00d2mnium Cultural (Culture For Everybody). I\u2019m one of the nine of political prisoners in this political vendetta trial. In my case and that of my colleague Jordi S\u00e0nchez, also a civil society leader, Spain is calling for a sentence of 17 years. Both the Spanish government, headed by Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez, and the highly politicized judiciary are ignoring the opinion of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which o stated that our detention is arbitrary and called for our immediate release. They have also ignored numerous calls for our release and the dropping of charges from groups such as Amnesty International, the World Organisation Against Torture and Front Line Defenders.<\/p>\n

The fact that Spain is using the courts and criminal law to undermine basic human rights it is very bad news for Europe as a whole, and for the world. But whatever happens, we will once again exercise the human rights that they condemn.<\/p>\n

I am the proud father of four children, one of them a beautiful baby born just a week ago today. But my priority is no longer to get out of prison, but to seek a democratic solution to the political conflict between Catalonia and Spain, through sincere dialogue and negotiation, as Scotland with the United Kingdom and Quebec with Canada have done.<\/p>\n

Non-violent action, and as a last resort civil disobedience, are today essential tools for democratic change to build a better world. This has recently been shown by Carola Rackete and Oscar Camps on the European coasts, heeding the call for humanitarian conscience by saving refugees.<\/p>\n

715 nights in prison have only strengthened my commitment to human rights: within these walls I have become increasingly aware of the dire situation we are seeing all over the world. The abuse of human rights has stolen lives and futures from hundreds of thousands of people and the humanitarian challenges are enormous: the climate crisis, inequality, indifference to refugees fleeing famine or war and the persecution of political dissidence affect all our struggles. This conference is a source of hope and at the same time of inescapable responsibility.<\/p>\n

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my most sincere thanks to the organisations defending human rights for their essential daily work, as well as for their support for our freedom, and in particular to Front Line Defenders for allowing us to share our testimony today.<\/p>\n
