{"id":231063,"date":"2020-01-22T16:41:19","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T15:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnium.cat\/?p=231063"},"modified":"2020-01-22T16:41:19","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T15:41:19","slug":"un-member-states-urge-spain-to-ensure-freedom-of-expression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnium.cat\/en\/un-member-states-urge-spain-to-ensure-freedom-of-expression\/","title":{"rendered":"UN member states urge Spain to ensure freedom of expression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Up to 20 UN member states have shown their concern with regard to human rights violations in Spain<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Geneva (Switzerland) 22.01.2020 &#8211; <strong>UN member states such as Germany, Italy, Switzerland or Belgium have urged Spain to take the necessary steps to ensure freedom of expression and the right to peacefully protest.<\/strong> The Spanish mission had to hear these recommendations like these during the Universal Periodic Review, a United Nations process to evaluate the state of human rights in member states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Swiss lawyer <strong>Olivier Peter<\/strong>, Jordi Cuixart\u2019s lawyer and international spokesperson of \u00d2mnium Cultural, claims that the fact that several UN member states recommended Spain to protect freedom of expression and the right to peacefully protest \u201cshows that there is a concern in the international community about the respect of human rights in Spain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most of the criticism that Spain received during the session was with regard to police violence and the \u201cGag Law\u201d (Ley Mordaza). Germany, for instance, asked to make sure that the Security Law doesn\u2019t weaken the right to hold civil protests. <strong>Also, Belgium, in a written question, requested to know which follow-up will Spain give to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which in turn, urged to release the Catalan political prisoners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact, this is one of the proposals that NGO\u2019s like <strong>\u00d2mnium Cultural, Amnesty International, and Front Line Defenders<\/strong> sent to the UN Human Rights Council in the UPR process.
